Top expressions of Maria Gomes from Bairrada are worlds apart from Fernão Pires as the grape is known elsewhere. Highly productive, it has been something of a workhouse. This thoroughbred hails from low yielding parcels on chalky clay soils. The hand-harvested estate fruit was picked relatively early with freshness and longevity in mind. After natural cold settling, the must was fermented and aged on lees in used French oak barrels for 12-14 months. It was bottled unfiltered and unfined.
