Born and raised in Óbidos DOC in Lisboa, Rodrigo Martins has not strayed far, completing his degree and Masters in Viticulture and Oenology in Lisboa.  Aged 30, he was snapped up by the co-operative in  Alcobaça, in Lisboa’s Encostas d'Aire DOC. He still makes wine there, but has steadily grown his winemaking portfolio consulting for Quinta do Olival Murta among others. When Martins took over a vineyard in Alcobaça in 2014, he seized the chance to found his own label, Espera (meaning hope).  It has allowed the winemaker to experiment with wine profiles, grape varieties and zero (except sulphur) oenological products. Martins has since planted a vineyard in Alcobaça and, last year, another in Óbidos.  Home is where the heart is.
