Mateus Nicolau de Almeida Eremitas 'Amon de Kelia'
Mateus Nicolau de Almeida Eremitas 'Amon de Kelia'
White | Douro | 2018 | 12%
Pretty dried lavender and orange peel with a mineral streak (Riesling like petrol aromas). White peach and nectarines with moderate acidity that doesn’t kill the sweetness of the fruit. Lighter, secondary layers of espresso roast and smoke add contrast. Lots of body and great mouthfeel.

Wine Making
Nicolau de Almeida calls this collection of old vine unoaked single parcel Rabigatos from V. N. Foz Côa his “soil wines.”The soil is schist, but with nuances that give different characteristics to the wines. The wines are all made in the same way, with the fruit macerating on skins for a few hours in a granite basin. After pressing, the wine is racked into concrete vats where it ferments spontaneously without temperature control. Sees no oak. The Eremitas wines are named after the early Christian monks known as the desert monks, who isolated themselves in the desert meditating and searching for enlightenment.
